5 Tips When Making a Military Move

At All Around Moving and Storage, we want to start by saying “thank you” for your service- we all know that endlessly moving is just the tip of the sacrifices that you and your families make. That’s why our team gathered our best tips and tricks to help you with your next military move:

Start With the Positives

Especially for those moving with a spouse or kids, packing up every few years can prove difficult (and come with more than a few tears!) To help ease the transition period help your family to see the positives of relocating. Perhaps it’s closer to the beach or to family; maybe the move will bring a bigger house for space for everyone to enjoy. No matter what it is, make a list of all the pros so your family can get on board, too.

Next, spend an afternoon or two researching your new area to find all of the exciting places to visit. Nothing says adventure like a town with brand new hangouts, restaurants, arcades and parks to explore, so map out everywhere you want to check out once you move.

Organize Important Documents and Information
A multitude of moves often means a multitude of hiding places for those important documents we need so badly. While not all institutions allow photocopies, it’s still a good idea to make a few of each important legal document for those that do. Long before your move you’ll want to find and organize:

  • Birth Certificates (Including any Birth Abroad Certificates for military families that have grown overseas)
  • Social Security Cards
  • Driver’s Licenses/ State-Issued ID
  • Passports
  • Car and Medical Insurance Information
  • Vaccination Records For the Children

Know What You’re Entitled to Through the Military

We know that often you’ll receive your moving orders with turn around times that can leave your head spinning; still it’s important that you investigate the list of entitlements that may be coming your way. Sometimes military programs cover moving expenses, so start your search here and get every penny you deserve: Know Your Military Entitlements

Record Your Expenses

For the expenses not covered by military programs, we still recommend recording all expenses and saving the receipts for anything that has to do with your trip. These would include, but are not limited to:

  • Storage Units
  • Moving Rentals
  • Gas While Moving
  • Relocation Expenses
  • Utility Early Termination Fees (sometimes covered by the companies for military members)
  • Packing Supplies
  • Short Term Lodging

The list goes on and on. If this isn’t your first rodeo, then likely you know what will and won’t be covered, but if for nothing else, it’s always great to have for taxes or back up in case funding becomes available.

Sell or Rent?

Finally, if you own a car or home, you’ll need to make quick decisions on what to do with them. Depending on how far you’re going, your car may still be able to make the trip with you. For those being stationed overseas, perhaps selling it or placing it in the care of a responsible loved one is best.

For homeowners, we suggest looking into the rental market to possibly make money on your home while you’re away. Many companies offer programs to completely take over the process of finding tenants and keeping up with them, though of course, they come at a price. Still, it’s better than vacating your home with no plan in mind. Meet with a local realtor- or give someone you trust the right to act on your behalf- to sell or rent out your home depending on the situation you’re in.
