3 Top Tips to Safely Moving Your Furry Friends

If the four-legged pets greeting you at the door each day aren’t a part of the family, then we don’t know what is! Don’t forget to take into consideration the furry loves in your lives as well as you make the move from point A to B. With the big day coming up, check the following tips from All Around Moving & Storage off your pending to-do’s. With a plan in place- and a little bit of guidance- you can count on a smooth transition for the whole family- pets included!

Check With the Vet

Unless you’re moving relatively close and will continue to use the same office, you’ll need to find a new vet to care for your beloved pets. Make an appointment to consult with your current vet about transportation safety, any medicines your pet is currently taking and to make sure their vaccinations and records are all up to date and available.

With a large network to choose from, finding a new veterinarian for your pets may seem daunting. Ask your current vet for any available recommendations in your new area or talk to your soon-to-be neighbors about where they go for the best care possible.

Plan the Transportation

Since transporting your pets onboard the truck is not permitted, we recommend having a set plan for when and how your furry friends will get to your new home. Consider boarding them with friends or a local service until the actual move is complete. This allows you to focus on the tasks at hand, and not worry about negligent or unsafe care of your pets throughout the chaotic process.

Furthermore, it would be better to get into the new home, prior to bringing the pets- especially if there are many- so that you can find their specific items they need amongst the scattered boxes, ie: leash, food bowls, toys, etc. Additionally, you will want to walk the house and property one more time to check for any potential dangers for your pets. Look for holes in the fences, nails sticking out of patios or areas that could cause concern for your curious animals.

When you are ready to transport the animals, remember to do so safely. We recommend getting size appropriate carriers to help them feel secure during the transport. Remember to provide plenty of water and food for the duration of the trip. If the distance between homes is considerable, pre-plan your route with walking and bathroom breaks for your two or four-legged pals.

Update Their Information

Just like you must update your own personal records and accounts, the same must be done for your pets. Register with the town or Home Owners Association if applicable and introduce yourself- and your fur friends- to new neighbors. Finally, make sure their tags are updated with current phone numbers and addresses. The last thing you want is for someone to return your pup to the wrong house.

It doesn’t take much to keep your favorite furry friends safe throughout your move. A few simple tasks and preventative measures will go a long way towards welcoming your cats, dogs, reptiles, etc. to your brand, new home- without a headache or concern!
